What I love about my job is that in most cases we can get rid of the pain which may have been worsening for years, and return people to activities which they have been unable to do without pain. While joint replacement surgery is not life saving, it is a privilege to be able to do surgery which in so many cases gives patients "a new life".
If the hip joint is badly damaged, by osteoarthritis or other disease or previous injury or growth disorder patients will often experience pain in the groin and or knee and will lose function, such as the ability to walk comfortably or play sport. They may have stiffness and a limp. Patients will often have pain with activity and after activity, this can wake them at night.
Total Hip Replacement, or Hip Resurfacing for very young and active patients, are operations that can restore the hip to near normal, and restore a patient’s ability to do usual activities including reasonable sporting activities.
Hip replacement was named “the operation of the century” for its outstandingly good results which in most cases will abolish the pain. However as there is no surgery totally free of any risk, Dr Marel will discuss the risks and benefits of surgery and conservative (non operative) treatment with you at the time of your consultation.
Dr Ed Marel offers total hip replacement surgery at Bathurst Private Hospital and North Shore Private Hospital.
When the knee joint is badly damaged, either by osteoarthritis or previous injury or other diseases it may become very painful, deformed, stiff and even unstable. Patients may lose the ability to walk or play sports, they may not be able to walk or climb stairs without pain which may prevent sleep. In some cases the knee may give way causing falls.
Total knee replacement surgery is now very successful surgery for those knees which are too damaged to benefit from smaller surgery, in most cases the operation will abolish pain and allow return to all usual activities such as walking and reasonable sports. However as there is no surgery totally free of any risk, Dr Marel will discuss the risks and benefits of surgery and conservative (non operative) treatment with you at the time of your consultation.

Dr Marel was one of the designer surgeons and scientists who formed Optimized Orthopaedics in 2011. This small Australian start up company developed a new way to analyse patient specific spinal/pelvic movement to more accurately determine optimal positioning of Total Hip Replacement components, and then more accurately deliver this intraoperatively.
Optimized Orthopaedics and its technology were sold to Corin Orthopaedics in 2014 and the technology is now being used in hip replacement operations worldwide. Dr Marel remains a consultant to Corin, helping to guide further development, and teaching surgeons how to use it. Dr Marel uses the Optimized technology (Trinity OPS™) in most of his hip replacement operations (when indicated for the patient).
