After completing his medical degree from the University of Sydney Dr Marel did orthopaedic surgery specialist training in Sydney as well as in London and the USA, with fellowships in hip replacement and pelvic fracture surgery.
Dr Marel was a founding member of the Arthroplasty Society of Australia (hip and knee joint replacement surgeons) in 1993 and was president of the society from 1999 to 2001. He was an examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Surgery for its final orthopaedic qualification from 2004 to 2012 and was chairman of the National Joint Replacement Registry from 2011 to 2015. The world renowned Joint Replacement Registry, set up by the Australian Orthopaedic Association, keeps details and measures outcomes of all joint replacement procedures in Australia, giving information to surgeons patients hospitals and governments leading to a continual improvement in outcomes for patients.
Dr Marel has a particular interest in instability and dislocation of replaced hips and in the orientation of components in Total Hip Replacement surgery, presenting at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in 1993 and 1994 and was one of the designers of the Optimized Orthopaedics analysis system which was developed by an Australian start-up company later bought by Corin. He was involved in the development of a US patent, granted in 2015 for "Computer-implemented method, a computing device and a computer readable storage medium for providing alignment information data for the alignment of an orthopaedic implant for a joint of a patient".
Dr Marel is involved in research and has numerous publications and is a frequently invited speaker at joint replacement meetings in Australia and internationally, including the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons in Dallas in 2016 and the Malaysian Orthopaedic Association Conference in 2014.
Dr Marel was a founding director of the Peninsula Orthopaedic Research Institute and helps train young orthopaedic surgeons through a fellowship in reconstructive surgery.
Dr Marel operates at North Shore Private Hospital in Sydney and Bathurst Private Hospital. He sees patients at Peninsula Orthopaedics Frenchs Forest and at Charles Sturt University in Bathurst.
Married with one adult son, Dr Marel is a competitive glider pilot who flies long distance cross country flights in the summer months.
